Hairspray is the story of a merry teen named Tracy Turnblad, a wannabe dancer who wants to earn a place on a local television programme referred to as the Corny Collins Show. The show is in fact based on a Baltimore-based telly show referred to as the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.

Tracy is unheard of in the performing arts industry when she has an interview, yet she is elected for a role & with long odds becomes a dancing icon almost overnight. Tracy is delighted by this newfound recognition, and she opts to apply her recognition to help bring about positive improvements to the television show. The basic cause behind these positive changes is related to race. Tracy hopes to racially integrate the show, & as anybody could guess, she is met with huge conflict.

Hairspray transferred to the West End in London in two thousand and seven, opening for first previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being revealed to the paying public at its big opening on October the thirtieth, 2007. The theatre show has had some famed actors — Michael Ball takes the part of Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s mother, offering a wonderful performance in this complex female part, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop manager Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End also features newcomer to the theatre stage, Leanne Jones, in the main position of Tracy.

Hairspray the musical has received numerous upbeat reviews from the media & musical theatre enthusiasts alike. Jacqueline stated: “I have been to the show four times thus far and I will surely be going back sometime next week & a few more times after that. I love the show and wish they could stay on a great deal longer. Ben Ellis is spectacular as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all fantastic. The musical show hairspray is certainly my favourite, basically because its bubbly and if you are feeling dejected then it is certain to make you feel a whole lot happier.
